The symptoms of leukoplakia are one or more white patches on the surface of the tongue, underneath the tongue, or on the insides of the cheeks. The patches cannot be rubbed off and cannot be traced to any other cause. No pain or other symptoms are present.

2, 58 As the lesion progresses, it becomes thicker and whiter, sometimes developing a leathery appearance with surface fissures (homogeneous or thick leukoplakia) (Figure 5). Se hela listan på mayoclinic.org On clinical examination, the lesion presents as a non-homogeneous white patch with a slightly raised margin, particularly along its posterior border. On palpation, the lesion is hard to touch and appears tethered to underlying muscle. Figure 1. Brouns et al. (2013) found that 52.7% had homogeneous leukoplakia and 47.27% cases had non-homogeneous leukoplakia. The reasons for the higher incidence of homogenous leukoplakia in the present study are difficult to explain as they are multifactorial. Homogeneous leukoplakia is a uniformly white flat plaque with a smooth or relatively smooth surface; non-homogeneous leukoplakia may be nodular or verrucous having a wrinkled or corrugated surface or may be a mingling of white and red areas termed erythroleukoplakia [ 7, 10, 11 Leukoplakia, also called “leukokeratosis” or “leukoplasia” is a medical condition in which plaque, keratin, and irregular patch formation occur on the mucous membrane of the oral cavity. It is characterized by the formation of irregular white patches on the mucosal linings, accompanied by pain, inflammation, and tenderness. Leukoplakia, also called “leukokeratosis” or “leukoplasia” is a medical condition in which plaque, keratin and irregular patch formation occurs on the mucous membrane of the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract or the linings of the urinary tract and the genitals.

Homogeneous leukoplakia on tongue

Homogeneous — refers to homogeneous uniform colour AND texture.

The speckled type is a red and white lesion, with a predominantly white surface. Leukoplakia can be either solitary or multiple. Leukoplakia may appear on any site of the oral cavity, the most common sites being: buccal mucosa, alveolar mucosa, floor of the mouth, tongue, lips and palate. Classically two clinical types of leukoplakia are recognised: homogeneous and nonhomogeneous, which can co-exist.
